iOS 27 Battery Draining Fast? Causes, Fixes and When to Replace It
21 Oct
iOS 27 reached iPhones on 14 September 2026, and within days the same complaint was everywhere: an iPhone battery draining fast after the update, on phones that used to last the whole day. Sound familiar? The good news is that most iOS 27 battery drain is temporary or can be fixed in Settings. The bad news is that an update also tends to expose a battery that was already wearing out.
The short answer: give your iPhone 2 to 3 days after updating, keep it charging overnight, and then check Battery Health. If drain continues after that and the battery's maximum capacity is below 80%, the update isn't the real problem. The battery is.
Is Battery Drain Normal After the iOS 27 Update?
Yes, for the first few days. After a major update, your iPhone does a lot of work in the background. It re-indexes photos, messages and files for search, downloads new assets, and updates apps. That work uses power, and it usually settles within 48 to 72 hours.
Apple's first fix release, iOS 27.0.1, came out on 28 September 2026. Still on 27.0? Update first, before you try anything else.
Why iOS 27 Drains Your Battery Faster
Most iOS 27 battery issues come down to one of these six causes.
- Background indexing. This is normal, temporary, and heaviest on phones with large photo libraries.
- Apps that aren't ready for iOS 27 yet. An app that hasn't been updated can keep running in the background or crash and restart over and over.
- New features switched on by default. Widgets, location-based suggestions and live activities all wake the phone more often.
- Weak mobile signal. Your iPhone works harder to hold a connection in basements, lifts and patchy areas.
- An ageing battery. A worn battery can't keep up with the extra load, so the drain feels much worse than it is on a newer phone.
- A software fault that the update introduced or brought to the surface. This is less common, and a clean reset usually clears it.
iPhone Battery Health Check on iOS 27
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery Health.
- Look at Maximum Capacity. On iPhone 15 and later, the same screen also shows the cycle count.
Apple designs batteries in iPhone 14 and earlier models to keep 80% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles. For iPhone 15 and later models, that figure is 1,000 cycles. Once maximum capacity drops below 80%, or the screen shows a "Service" message, battery replacement is the fix that actually works. No setting will bring the lost capacity back.
How to Fix iOS 27 Battery Drain
Work through these in order. Most phones get their normal iOS 27 battery life back before step 5.
- Wait 72 hours and charge overnight. Plug the phone in on Wi-Fi at night so the background work can finish.
- Install the latest update. Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update. Fix releases like iOS 27.0.1 often include battery and stability fixes.
- Update every app. Open the App Store, tap your profile picture and choose Update All.
- Find the app using the most power. In Settings, then Battery, check the activity by app. An app you barely opened that sits near the top should be updated, restricted or deleted.
- Cut background activity. Turn off Background App Refresh (Settings, General) for apps that don't need it, and set Location Services (Settings, Privacy & Security) to "While Using" for most apps.
- Restart the phone. It's simple, but it clears processes that got stuck during the update.
- Use Low Power Mode on long days. Switch it on from Control Centre or Settings, then Battery.
- Reset All Settings as a last resort. Go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, then Reset All Settings. Your photos and data stay, but Wi-Fi passwords and preferences go back to default.

iPhone Battery Draining Overnight After iOS 27
Losing a few per cent overnight is normal. Losing 20% or more while the phone sits untouched usually comes down to one of three things: an app working in the background, a sync that's stuck (iCloud Photos can be one in the first week after an update), or a battery that can no longer hold its charge.
Check the battery activity screen the next morning. One app showing hours of background activity is the place to start. If the list looks normal and the drop keeps happening, the battery itself is the likely cause.
Signs It's the Battery, Not iOS 27
- Maximum capacity below 80%, or a "Service" message on the Battery Health screen
- The phone switches off at 20% or 30% charge
- It feels warm while sitting idle
- The drain is still there a week after the update, even after the fixes above
- The screen is lifting at one edge, or the back of the phone has started to bulge
That last sign is urgent. A swollen battery keeps expanding and can crack the screen, so stop charging the phone and get it checked the same day.
Charging faults can look like battery drain too. If your iPhone won't charge past a certain point, charges very slowly or only charges at an angle, the problem may be the port or the cable rather than the battery. We cover that in more detail on our charging issues repair page. A worn MagSafe charger can also leave you waking up to a half-charged phone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does battery drain last after the iOS 27 update?
Usually 2 to 3 days, while the phone finishes indexing and updating apps in the background. If drain continues past a week, check Battery Health and the battery activity by app.
Does iOS 27 damage the iPhone battery?
No. An update can't reduce your battery's maximum capacity. It can only use more power for a while, or reveal that a battery below 80% capacity is already worn out.
Should you downgrade from iOS 27 to fix battery drain?
Generally no. Apple usually stops letting phones install an older version within a few weeks of a new release, and installing the latest fix release, such as 27.0.1 or later, is the safer route.
Which iPhones get iOS 27?
iOS 27 runs on iPhone 11 and newer models. Older supported models such as the iPhone 11 and 12 are more likely to have batteries near or below 80% capacity by now.
At what battery health should you replace an iPhone battery?
Below 80% maximum capacity, or as soon as the "Service" message appears. On iPhone 14 and earlier, that typically happens after about 500 charge cycles. On iPhone 15 and later, it's closer to 1,000.
