A failed update leaves you with a device stuck between two operating systems, and often one that will not start at all. It looks alarming and it is one of the more recoverable problems we deal with.

What matters most is what you do next. Repeated forced restarts and random recovery attempts are exactly what turn a recoverable update into genuine data loss. If it is stuck, stop and let somebody look at it.

Where updates get stuck

All of these are worth bringing in rather than fighting with.

  • The progress bar has not moved for hours
  • The Apple logo shows and nothing else ever happens
  • A cable and computer symbol appears on the screen
  • The update failed and now it restarts in a loop
  • It says there is not enough storage to update
  • It downloads and then fails at the same point every time
  • A Watch update has been stuck on the progress ring for hours
  • It finished updating but now runs terribly

Why updates fail

Not enough free storage is the usual reason. An update needs considerably more free space than the download size, because it has to unpack and stage the whole thing before installing. Devices that have run near full for years fail here constantly.

A dropped connection during download leaves a partial file that then fails to install. So does a battery going flat halfway through, which is why every update warning tells you to plug in first.

Failing storage is the more serious answer. An update writes a large amount of data across the drive, so a drive with bad sectors will often fail during an update even though it seemed fine for normal use. In that case the update did not break anything, it exposed something already broken.

On an Apple Watch there is an extra trap. Watch updates need the watch on its charger, in range of the paired iPhone, and above a minimum charge. Take any one of those away midway and it hangs. That version is usually the easiest to recover.

What is involved and how long it takes

The order matters here. Preserving your data comes before getting it running again.

  1. Stop and assess. We identify which stage it failed at before touching anything. Rushing to restore is what destroys data on these jobs.
  2. Data first. Wherever the storage can still be read, your data comes off before any recovery is attempted. This is the step most people skip and later regret.
  3. Recovery. Completing or rolling back the update using the proper recovery process rather than a full erase.
  4. Check the storage. If the drive caused the failure, no amount of reinstalling helps. Drive health gets checked before anything is handed back.
  5. Restore and test. Your data goes back on, the device gets used properly for a while, and only then does it come back to you.

What is involved and how long it takes

Most of these are software jobs. It only becomes expensive when failing storage turns out to be the real cause underneath.

We will tell you before starting whether your data looks recoverable, because that changes what you may want us to do.

Job What it involves Time needed
Assessment Working out which stage it failed at, before anything is touched Free, same day
Update recovery, data kept Update completed or rolled back without erasing Same day
Full system rebuild with restore Clean install, then your backed up data restored 1 to 2 days
Data recovery from a failed update Storage imaged and data pulled off separately 2 to 5 days
Storage replacement and rebuild Where the drive itself caused the failure 1 to 2 days

Parts and warranty

Software work carries a thirty day guarantee on the same fault. Any hardware we replace carries the full twelve months.

We will always tell you before doing anything that erases the device. That decision is yours to make, not ours.

Why bring it to us

Many places wipe the device immediately because it is fast and it always works. It also loses everything you had. We attempt recovery with your data intact first, every time.

Free assessment, free collection anywhere in Bangalore, and honest advice about whether an older device should be updated at all.

Questions people ask

It has been on the Apple logo for hours. Is it dead?

Almost certainly not. It is stuck partway through an update. Stop forcing restarts, keep it on charge, and bring it in. Repeated forced restarts are what turn this into real data loss.

Will I lose my photos?

Usually not. Where the storage is still readable we take your data off before attempting anything. If the storage itself has failed, recovery is a separate job and we will quote it before starting.

Why does it say not enough storage when I have space free?

An update needs far more free room than the download size, because it unpacks and stages the whole thing before installing. A few gigabytes free is often not enough.

Should I update my older device at all?

Sometimes no. Newer versions ask more of the hardware and older devices can slow noticeably. Ask us about your specific model before you tap install.

My Apple Watch update is stuck. Is that different?

Usually easier. Watch updates need the watch on its charger, in range of the phone and above a minimum charge. Losing any of those midway causes the hang, and it is normally recoverable.

It updated fine but is now very slow. Fixable?

Often yes. It is usually storage pressure, a battery that cannot keep up, or background indexing that has not finished. We check all three.

Book it in

If your device is stuck mid update, stop restarting it and bring it in. The sooner it stops being forced off, the better the chances of keeping everything on it.
