After a spill, what you might see
Some of these show immediately and some appear weeks later, which is why people often do not connect the two.

Why liquid damage keeps getting worse
The liquid itself is rarely what kills a device. Corrosion is. Water carrying minerals, sugar or salt leaves a residue on the board, and that residue keeps attacking the metal for as long as it sits there. This is why something can work fine for a fortnight and then start failing in a way that seems unrelated.
Powering up a wet board causes the real damage. Current takes paths it was never meant to take and components burn out. A device brought in wet but never switched on has far better odds than one somebody kept trying to start.
Sugary drinks and salt water are considerably worse than clean water. Tea, coffee and soft drinks leave a sticky conductive residue that spreads further and attacks faster. Sea water is the worst of all.
Water resistance ratings mislead people. Recent iPhones and Apple Watches are rated, but that rating is for fresh water, when new, with every seal intact. It degrades with age and every repair, and it has never covered tea, chlorinated pool water or sea water.
What is involved and how long it takes
Speed matters here more than on any other repair. The sooner it arrives, the better the outcome.
- Do not power it on. The most useful thing that happens is what you do not do. Bring it in as it is, switched off, and do not try charging it to see whether it works.
- Full strip down. The device is completely disassembled and the board removed. Nothing can be cleaned properly while it is still inside the case.
- Ultrasonic cleaning. The board goes through an ultrasonic bath to remove residue from under the components, where the corrosion actually lives. Wiping the surface achieves nothing.
- Inspection and component repair. Under a microscope, checking for corroded and burnt components and replacing what has failed.
- Staged testing. Power applied gradually on a bench supply and watched, rather than switching it on and hoping. Then a long soak test before it goes back.
What is involved and how long it takes

What should I do right now?
Switch it off if it is on and leave it off. Do not charge it. Do not use a hairdryer on it. Stand it so liquid drains out rather than further in, and bring it to us as soon as you can.

That rating is for fresh water, when new, with every seal intact. It fades with age and with every repair, and it never covered tea, pool water or sea water. Worth getting checked even so.
What are the chances?

Can you get my photos back if it is dead?
Usually yes. The storage often survives even when the board does not. That is quoted separately from the repair, so you are not paying for a revival that will not happen.
