How it usually starts

What goes wrong inside
Under the button sits a small dome switch on a flex cable. Every press flexes that dome, and after enough presses it loses its spring. That is the mushy feeling people describe just before it stops working properly.
Dust is the second cause and it is worse here than in drier cities. Fine grit works into the gap around the button and either blocks the travel or holds the switch partly closed. A permanently closed power button causes random restarts, which almost always gets blamed on software instead.
A drop can shift the assembly or crack the flex cable. Liquid corrodes the contacts. And on many models the power button flex carries other things too, so a failure there can take the microphone, the flash or a sensor with it.
On a MacBook the power button is part of the Touch ID assembly on recent models, which makes it a bigger job than it looks. On an Apple Watch the side button and the Digital Crown are separate parts with separate faults.
What is involved and how long it takes
Almost always a parts replacement rather than board work, which keeps it quick and affordable.
- Test the button and the software. First we confirm the fault is physical. Sometimes the device is frozen or a setting is at fault and no repair is needed at all.
- Open and inspect. Checking the dome switch, the flex cable and the gap around the button for grit or corrosion.
- Clean or replace. Cleaning sometimes restores the click, which is always the cheaper outcome. Where the flex has failed it gets replaced.
- Check what shares the cable. On many models the power flex carries other components, so we test the microphone, flash and sensors before closing up.
- Reassemble and test. Press test, sleep and wake, force restart, and a check that the device is not triggering itself.

This is one of the cheaper repairs on an iPhone or iPad. On a MacBook it is tied in with Touch ID on recent models, which makes it a larger job.

Questions people ask
Can I just keep using AssistiveTouch?
You can, and plenty of people do for months. The problem comes when the battery goes completely flat, because then you need the physical button to start the device again.
My device keeps restarting on its own. Is that the button?
Very often, yes. A button stuck slightly down reads as being held, and the device responds by restarting. It is worth ruling out before anyone wipes anything.
Will you need to replace the screen too?
No. The button assembly is reached from inside, so the screen is removed and refitted rather than replaced. If your screen was already cracked we will tell you before opening it.
How long will it take?
iPhone buttons are usually same day. iPad and Apple Watch take a day or two because of the reseal. MacBook power buttons take a day or two since Touch ID is involved on recent models.
Is it worth fixing on an old device?
Usually yes, because it is a low cost repair. We will tell you if we think the money is better spent elsewhere.
My Digital Crown is stuck rather than the side button. Same job?
Related but not identical. The Crown has its own assembly and on some models it houses sensors too. We test both and quote for whichever has actually failed.
