iPad speaker complaints are worth checking carefully before anyone opens anything, because a decent share of them need no repair at all. Sound gets sent to a Bluetooth speaker somebody paired months ago, or the iPad thinks headphones are still plugged in, or an app has taken the output and not given it back.

What you are hearing
Different symptoms point at different causes, and two of these need no parts at all.
- Sound comes from one side only
- The audio is muffled, as though it is coming from under a cloth
- Crackling or buzzing that gets worse as you turn it up
- A rattle on bass or on notification sounds
- No sound at all, though the volume slider moves
- The volume is very low even at maximum
- Headphones work perfectly but the speakers do not
- Sound cuts out and returns at random
Hardware, or something free to fix
Start with the free checks. If a Bluetooth speaker or a pair of earbuds is still paired and within range, the iPad may be sending sound there without telling you. If the iPad still believes headphones are connected, usually because of debris in the headphone socket on older models, the speakers stay silent by design.
A blocked speaker mesh is the most common genuine hardware cause. iPad speakers sit right at the bottom edge where dust and pocket fluff collect, and once the mesh is packed the sound goes muffled and starts rattling. Cleaning is quick and it makes a bigger difference than people expect.
A blown speaker comes next, and it comes from running the volume at maximum for long stretches. Once the cone is damaged you get distortion and buzzing that get worse as the volume goes up, and it will not recover on its own.
Least often, the audio circuit on the logic board fails. That gives you very low volume, sound on one channel only, or complete silence while headphones carry on working perfectly.
What is involved and how long it takes
The free checks come first, because opening an iPad is not a small job and it should not be done unnecessarily.

Parts and warranty

Questions people ask
Headphones work but the speakers do not. What does that mean?
Usually good news. It points at output routing or the audio circuit rather than the speakers themselves, and routing problems are free to fix. Check Bluetooth first.
Sound is muffled. Do I need new speakers?
Very often not. A speaker mesh packed with dust sounds exactly like a failing speaker. Cleaning it properly is quick and it is the first thing we try.
Why does it buzz only when it is loud?
That is a damaged speaker cone, and it is what running at full volume for long periods does over time. It will not come back on its own and it slowly worsens.
Can I clean the grille myself?
Gently with a dry soft brush. Do not push anything into the mesh and do not use compressed air at close range, because both push the dust further in and make the job harder.
Does the screen have to come off?
For an actual speaker replacement, yes. Cleaning and settings fixes do not need the iPad opened at all, which is why they cost so much less.
One side is quieter than the other. Is that normal?
No. iPads with stereo speakers should be balanced. An imbalance usually means one mesh is blocked or one speaker is failing, and the channel test tells us which.
