How a bad port behaves

A port fault behaves differently from a battery fault, and these are the tells.

• The cable only charges when held at a particular angle
• The cable feels loose and falls out by itself
• It connects and disconnects repeatedly, chiming each time
• A computer does not see the iPad even though it charges
• It charges from one cable but not another
• The port area gets warm while charging
• You can see grey fluff packed inside the opening
• Nothing at all happens when you plug it in

Why iPad ports fail

Lint is the answer far more often than anything else. iPads live in bags rather than pockets, so the debris tends to be coarser than what gets into a phone, and it packs down harder. Cleaning it out properly takes about half an hour and it is the cheapest repair we do.

Bent pins come next. Pulling the cable out sideways, or catching it when the iPad slides off a sofa, bends the fine contacts inside. Once one is bent the connection becomes intermittent, and it gets steadily worse rather than better.

Corrosion is the third cause. A spill, or simply humidity over years, leaves the pins green and unreliable. This often shows up long after the event that caused it, which is why people cannot connect the two.

Least often, the port assembly works loose from the board or the data lines fail on the board itself. That needs micro soldering rather than a straight swap, and it is work most shops will not attempt.

What is involved and how long it takes

Cleaning is tried first because it is quick, cheap and it genuinely works on a large share of these.

1. Inspection under magnification. We look inside the port properly. Lint, bent pins and corrosion each look different and need completely different handling.
2. Cable and charger elimination. Testing with known good cables and chargers, because a fair number of these turn out to be a failing cable rather than the iPad.
3. Cleaning. Compacted debris removed with the correct tools. Not a pin and not a paperclip, both of which bend the contacts and turn a cheap job into an expensive one.
4. Port replacement where needed. Where pins are bent or corroded, the port assembly is replaced. On an iPad the screen has to come off for this, so the reseal is part of the job.
5. Board repair where needed. If the fault sits behind the port, we repair the component on the board rather than replacing the whole thing.

Is it the port or the battery?

If it charges at an angle, or the cable feels loose, it is the port. If it charges fine but runs down in two hours, it is the battery. We test both before quoting, and the test is free.

Can I clean it myself?

Gently, with a dry soft brush or a wooden toothpick, with the iPad switched off. Never a metal pin, never liquid. Bent pins cost far more to put right than a professional clean.

It charges but my computer will not see it. Why?

The port carries power on some pins and data on others. Damage to the data pins alone gives you exactly that. It usually means a port replacement rather than a clean.

Does the screen have to come off?

For a full port replacement, yes, on every iPad model. That is why it costs more than the same job on a phone, and it is why the reseal matters. Cleaning does not need the iPad opened.

How long will it take?

Cleaning is done while you wait. A port replacement is a day or two because of the reseal and curing time. Board level work takes longer.

My cable is fine, I tested it on my phone. Could it still be the cable?

Possibly. Some cables carry power fine but have failing data lines, and iPads draw more current than phones, so a marginal cable can fail on an iPad while working on a phone.
