iMac Speaker Not Working: Repair in Bangalore

iMac speaker problems are worth checking carefully before anyone opens the machine, because a good share of them are not hardware at all. Sound gets routed to a monitor over HDMI, or to a Bluetooth speaker in another room, or an app has grabbed the output and not let go.

When it genuinely is hardware, the awkward part is that the speakers sit behind the display. Reaching them means removing the screen and resealing it, which is why this repair costs more than the size of the part suggests.

What you are hearing

Different sounds point at different causes, and a couple of these need no repair at all.

• Sound comes from one side only
• Crackling or buzzing, usually worse at higher volume
• The audio is distorted or muffled as though under a blanket
• A rattle you can hear on bass notes
• No sound at all, though the volume slider moves
• Sound cuts out and comes back at random
• It works with headphones but not through the speakers
• Volume is very low even at maximum

Hardware, or not

Start with output routing, because it is free to check. If your iMac is connected to a monitor or a TV over HDMI, macOS often sends the sound there and leaves the internal speakers silent. The same happens with a Bluetooth speaker that is still paired somewhere in the house. Headphones that work while speakers do not is a strong hint the fault is routing rather than hardware.

A blown speaker cone is the most common genuine hardware fault, and it comes from running the volume at maximum for long periods. Once the cone is damaged you get distortion and buzzing that get worse as the volume rises. It does not recover on its own.

Heat and time affect the amplifier on the logic board. That gives you very low volume, sound on one channel only, or a complete loss of output while headphones continue to work perfectly.

Dust is the least serious cause and it is common here. A build up in the speaker grille muffles the sound and adds a rattle. Cleaning it out is quick and cheap.

The repair

1. Output and settings check. Sound output device, connected displays, Bluetooth pairings and per app settings. This ends a fair share of these visits with no repair needed at all.

Headphones work but the speakers do not. What does that mean?

Usually good news. It normally points at output routing or the amplifier rather than the speakers themselves. Check first whether sound is being sent to a connected monitor or a Bluetooth device, because that is free to fix.

Why is there buzzing only at high volume?

That is a damaged speaker cone, and it is what running at maximum volume for long periods does over time. It will not recover on its own and it slowly gets worse.

Is it worth repairing, or should I use external speakers?

An honest question and the answer depends on how you use the machine. If a decent external speaker suits you, that can be the cheaper route and we will say so. If you want the iMac working as it should, the repair is straightforward.

Do you have to remove the screen?

For an actual speaker replacement, yes, on every iMac model. That is why the labour costs more than the part. Cleaning and settings fixes do not need the machine opened.
