iMac Screen Repair
iMac Screen Repair and LCD Replacement in Bangalore
The iMac display is the most expensive part of the machine and the most awkward to get at. On every model from 2012 onwards the glass is bonded to the chassis with adhesive strips, so there is no lifting it off with suction cups the way you could on the older ones.
That matters to you for two reasons. First, this is not a job to attempt at home, because a cracked panel becomes a cracked panel plus a bent chassis very quickly. Second, resealing it properly afterwards is half the work. A display that is not bonded evenly lets dust straight in behind the glass, and then you are looking at specks you can never wipe off.

Screen faults we see on iMacs
Some of these need a new panel and some really do not, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you.
- Cracked or chipped glass, usually along one edge
- Vertical or horizontal lines running down the picture
- Patches of the screen that stay dark or discoloured
- The whole display has gone dim but you can see a faint image
- Dead or stuck pixels in a cluster
- Dust or specks trapped behind the glass
- Flickering that gets worse as the machine warms up
- Nothing on screen at all, though the machine is clearly running
What is actually wrong
A faint image that you can just make out if you shine a torch at the screen is not a dead panel. That is the backlight, and it is a much cheaper repair. The picture is being drawn perfectly, there is simply no light behind it. People get quoted for a whole panel on this one constantly.
Lines and dark patches usually mean the panel itself or the cable running to it. A cable that has worked loose or frayed at the hinge point gives lines that change when the machine is moved. A genuinely failed panel gives lines that never change.
Dust behind the glass comes from a display that was opened and not resealed properly. It is almost always the result of a previous repair somewhere else. The fix is a clean and a fresh adhesive seal rather than a new screen.
On some 2011 iMacs a failing graphics chip produces artefacts and lines that look exactly like a screen fault. Replacing the panel on one of those achieves nothing, which is why we test the output before quoting.
How the repair runs
The diagnosis decides whether this is an expensive job or a modest one, so it comes first and it is free.
- External display test. We plug the iMac into another monitor. If the picture is perfect there, the fault is the panel or its cable. If the same lines appear, it is the graphics side and a new screen would be wasted money.
- Backlight check. A torch test tells us in seconds whether the panel is drawing an image with no light behind it. That is the difference between a small repair and a large one.
- Opening the display. The adhesive is cut with the proper tool and the glass lifted evenly. Done wrong this bends the chassis, which is why it is worth paying somebody who does it regularly.
- Repair or replace. Backlight repair, cable replacement, a clean and reseal, or a full panel replacement, depending on what the tests found.
- Reseal and test. Fresh adhesive strips all the way round, then a full colour and brightness check before it is handed back. A proper seal is what keeps dust out for the next few years.
What an iMac screen repair costs
The spread here is wider than on any other iMac repair. A backlight fix and a 5K Retina panel are nowhere near the same money, so we never quote before testing.
Retina 4K and 5K panels cost considerably more than the older non-Retina ones. Tell us your model and year when you ring and we can give you a realistic range straight away.
| Job | Time needed |
|---|---|
| Backlight repair | 2 to 3 days |
| Display cable replacement | 1 to 2 days |
| Open, clean and reseal | 1 to 2 days |
| Non-Retina panel replacement | 2 to 4 days |
| Retina 4K or 5K panel replacement | 3 to 5 days |
Parts and warranty
Twelve month warranty on the panel and the work. That covers the display itself and the seal, so if dust starts appearing behind the glass inside the warranty period, bring it back.
We use genuine panels. On discontinued models where Apple no longer makes the part, we will tell you plainly that the replacement is a compatible one and what the difference is, before you agree to anything.
Why bring your iMac to us
Half the iMacs that arrive here for a new screen do not need one. Backlight faults, loose cables and graphics problems all look like a broken display from the outside, and each of them costs a fraction of a panel.
Free diagnosis including an external monitor test, genuine parts, free collection and delivery anywhere in Bangalore, and a written twelve month warranty. The workshop is in Marathahalli if you would rather watch the test yourself.
Frequently asked Questions -
My screen is very dark but I can just about see the picture. Is the screen dead?
No, and this is good news. That is a backlight fault, not a panel fault. The display is working, there is just no light behind it. It is one of the cheaper iMac screen repairs and it gets misquoted as a full panel replacement all the time.
Can you fix just the glass if the LCD underneath is fine?
On iMacs from 2012 onwards the glass and the LCD are bonded together as one unit, so they are replaced together. On the older models with magnetic glass, yes, the glass alone can be replaced and it is much cheaper.
There is dust behind my screen. Where did it come from?
Almost always a previous repair that was not resealed properly. It needs opening, cleaning and sealing again with fresh adhesive. You do not need a new panel for this.
Will a new screen fix the lines on my 2011 iMac?
Possibly not. Those models had a known graphics chip problem that produces lines and artefacts looking exactly like a screen fault. We test on an external monitor first, which settles it in two minutes and can save you a lot of money.
How long will you keep my iMac?
Two to five days depending on the job and whether the panel is in stock. Retina panels take longer. We will give you a date when you drop it off rather than a vague answer.
Do I lose my files?
No. Screen work does not touch the storage at all. We still suggest you back up first, purely as a sensible habit.
