Patterns to notice before you call

When the restarts happen tells us more than anything else, so try to spot which of these matches.

• It restarts during heavy work like video export or large files
• It restarts after running for a while, but never in the first ten minutes
• The fan gets loud, then it restarts
• It restarts at completely random moments with no pattern
• It restarts on a loop and never reaches the desktop
• A message about the machine restarting because of a problem appears
• It shuts down rather than restarting, and needs the power button

The usual reasons on an iMac

Heat is first, and in Bangalore it is a bigger factor than most people allow for. An iMac pulls air in at the bottom and pushes it out through the vent along the top edge. Over five or six years that path fills with dust, the machine cannot shed heat, and eventually it protects itself by shutting down. 1. Read the restart logs. The machine records the reason for each restart. It is the fastest route to the answer and it costs nothing to look.
2. Thermal test. Running the iMac hard while watching internal temperatures, to see whether it is shutting down to protect itself.
3. Power supply testing. Checking whether the internal supply holds voltage under sudden load, which is exactly the condition that trips a tired one.
4. Storage and memory checks. Drive health and a long memory test, particularly where the machine is stuck in a restart loop.
5. Fix, then soak test. After the repair the iMac runs under heavy load for several hours. A fault that appears once a day is not proven fixed by twenty minutes of testing.

Questions people ask

Is it software or hardware?

The log usually settles it within minutes. Restarts under heavy load point at heat or the power supply. A restart loop during startup points at the drive or the system files. Guessing between them is how people waste money.

Will reinstalling macOS fix it?

Only if software was the cause. If the machine is overheating or the power supply is tired, a clean install changes nothing at all and you have lost your setup for no reason.

My iMac restarts when I export video. Why then?

Heavy work draws more current and makes more heat at the same time. That is the classic signature of either a dust clogged cooling path or an ageing power supply. Both are fixable and neither is dramatic.
