A memory upgrade is one of the few things you can still do to an iMac that makes an immediate, obvious difference. If your machine slows to a crawl once you have a browser, Photoshop and a few other things open, this is very likely your problem.

The catch is that not every iMac can take one. Some models have a hatch on the back designed to be opened by the owner. Some need the entire display removed to reach the slots. When more memory is the answer

These point at memory pressure rather than a storage or processor problem.

• It slows down badly once you open a third or fourth application

What is happening inside

When the iMac runs out of physical memory it starts using the drive as overflow. Reading from a drive is enormously slower than reading from memory, and on a machine with a mechanical hard disk it is slower still. That gap is exactly what you feel as the machine grinding to a halt.

Eight gigabytes was generous in 2014 and is thin now. Modern browsers alone will use several gigabytes, and design or video work will use far more. The hardware has not got worse, the software has got hungrier.

Faulty memory is a different problem with different symptoms. Rather than steady slowness you get random crashes, restarts and error messages that name no particular application. A proper memory test finds this, and a quick pass will not. Intermittent memory faults need a long test to show themselves.

How we handle it

The first question is always which model you have, because it decides whether this is a ten minute job or a two hour one.

1. Identify the model. Serial number tells us the exact machine, the maximum memory it supports, the correct speed and type, and whether the slots are reachable at all.
2. Check it is really memory. We look at actual memory pressure while you use the machine normally. If the real bottleneck is a failing hard disk, extra memory will disappoint you and we would rather say so.
3. Memory test on the existing modules. Where the complaint is crashes rather than slowness, we test what is already fitted before selling you anything.
4. Fit the new memory. On 27 inch models this is quick through the rear hatch. On 21.5 inch models the display has to come off, which means cutting and replacing the adhesive seal.
5. Verify and test. Confirm the machine sees all of it, running at the right speed, then run it under load to be sure it is stable.

Cost

On a 27 inch iMac this is one of the cheapest useful upgrades available, because the hatch is designed to be opened. On a 21.5 inch machine the labour costs more than the memory does, since the screen has to come off and be resealed.

Can my iMac take more memory at all?

It depends entirely on the model. Most 27 inch iMacs have an owner accessible hatch. The 21.5 inch models need the display removed, and some have soldered memory that cannot be changed. Give us your serial number and we will confirm in a minute.

How much should I add?

For general use and browsing, 16GB is comfortable today. For design, photo or video work, 32GB is worth it if your model supports it. Going beyond what you will actually use is money that would do more good spent on an SSD.
