iMac Not Turning On: Power Repair
iMac Not Turning On: Power Repair in Bangalore
An iMac that does nothing when you press the button is alarming, mainly because you have no idea whether everything on it is still safe. In nearly every case it is. Power faults sit in the circuitry, well away from your storage.
The other thing worth saying early is that an iMac has no battery. That means there is no reserve smoothing out the mains supply, and the internal power supply is taking whatever comes out of the wall. In a city with the power quality most of Bangalore lives with, that supply is doing hard work.

Which kind of dead is it
These sound similar when described over the phone and they mean quite different things, so check which one yours is.
- Absolutely nothing. No fan, no chime, no light anywhere
- You hear the fan or a startup chime but the screen stays black
- It starts, runs for a few seconds, then shuts off
- The fan runs at full speed immediately and nothing else happens
- It only starts sometimes, and more often when it has been left off a while
- It died during a power cut or when the power came back
- There is a faint image on screen if you shine a torch at it
Where the power chain breaks
The internal power supply is the most common failure by some margin. It converts mains to the voltages the board needs, and it takes the full force of every spike and surge. Unprotected iMacs on Indian mains fail here more often than anywhere else in the world, and it is a well contained repair.
The power button and its cable is the next one, and it is the cheapest. The machine is perfectly healthy but is never told to start. Worth ruling out early because it is a small repair.
Then there are the voltage rails on the logic board. Modern boards bring up a sequence of rails in order, and if one fails the machine will not start at all. This is repairable at component level, which is a lot less expensive than the board swap most shops will quote you.
Finally, the case where the machine is actually running fine and you cannot see it. If you hear a fan or a chime, or a torch shows a faint picture, the fault is the display or the backlight rather than power. That is a completely different repair and usually a cheaper one.
Finding the fault
The order here is deliberate, working from the cheapest possible cause towards the most expensive.
- Rule out the display. A torch test and an external monitor tell us within a minute whether the machine is actually running. It is a surprisingly common answer and it saves the whole rest of the process.
- Test the mains side. Wall socket, cable and the machine on a known good supply. Occasionally the answer really is the socket, and we would rather find that than charge you for a repair.
- Power supply testing. Measuring what the internal supply is delivering under load. A supply that reads fine at rest and collapses under load is a classic and it needs testing properly.
- Board rail testing. Where the supply is healthy, we work through the voltage rails on the board to find where the startup sequence stops.
- Repair and long test. Power faults are tested over hours rather than minutes, because an intermittent supply will start happily once and fail on the fifth attempt.
What it costs
A power button repair and a board level rail repair sit at completely opposite ends of the range, which is why we test before quoting rather than after.
The diagnosis is free. If the machine turns out to be beyond sensible repair, you owe nothing for finding that out.
| What has failed | Time needed |
|---|---|
| Power button or cable repair | Same day |
| Power supply replacement | 1 to 2 days |
| Board level power repair | 3 to 5 days |
| Liquid damage recovery | 3 to 7 days |
| Data recovery from a dead machine | 2 to 5 days |
Parts and warranty
Twelve month warranty on the parts and the work, board level repairs included on the same terms as everything else.
If the machine genuinely cannot be brought back, we can nearly always still get your data off the drive, and we quote that separately.
Why bring your iMac to us
We check whether the machine is actually running before we start on the power system. A chime and a black screen is a display fault, not a power fault, and confusing the two costs people real money.
Free diagnosis, component level repair rather than automatic board replacement, genuine parts, free collection across Bangalore and twelve months of written cover.
Questions people ask
Are my photos and files gone?
Almost certainly not. Power faults are in the circuitry and do not touch the drive. Even in the worst case where the board cannot be saved, the data can normally be recovered from the storage.
I can hear the fan but the screen is black. Is that a power problem?
No, and that is better news. If it makes any sound at all, the machine is powering up and the fault is the display, the backlight or the cable to it. Usually a cheaper repair than a power fault.
It died right after a power cut. Is that related?
Almost certainly. The surge when mains power returns is harder on electronics than the cut itself. The internal power supply takes the hit first, which is why it fails most often.
Is board level power repair actually reliable?
Yes, when it is done properly. The failed component is replaced with a new one, so that section of the board is effectively new, and it carries the same twelve month warranty as any other repair.
How do I stop this happening again?
A surge protector at minimum, and a UPS if you can. It is a small amount of money against a repair bill, and in this city it pays for itself.
What if it is not worth fixing?
We tell you, you pay nothing for the diagnosis, and we will give you a straight opinion on whether we would spend the money ourselves. Sometimes the honest answer is no.
Book it in
Before you give up on it, let us test it. The diagnosis costs nothing, most of these turn out to be the power supply rather than the board, and your files are almost always fine either way.
