iMac Motherboard and Logic Board Repair
iMac Motherboard and Logic Board Repair in Bangalore
Motherboard and logic board mean the same thing. It is the main circuit board holding the processor, the memory controller, the graphics and the power circuits, and when something on it fails the machine usually will not start, or starts and behaves strangely.
Here is the part that matters commercially. Most repair shops respond to a board fault by quoting you for a whole replacement board, because it is fast and it always works. On an iMac that figure often comes close to what the machine is worth. Repairing the one component that actually failed takes proper bench time and specialist equipment, and it costs a fraction of the price.

Signs of a board fault
These are the symptoms that usually turn out to be the board rather than something simpler.
- Completely dead, no fan, no chime, no light at all
- The fan spins at full speed the moment it is switched on
- It powers up but nothing ever appears on screen
- Coloured artefacts, lines or a distorted picture on an external monitor too
- It shuts down after a few seconds every time
- The machine does not see its own drive or memory
- USB ports, ethernet or the camera have all stopped together
- It stopped working after a power cut or a voltage spike
What kills an iMac board
Power problems are the biggest cause in this country and it is not close. Voltage spikes, poor earthing and the surge when mains power returns after a cut all put stress on the board. An iMac plugged straight into the wall with no protection is taking every one of those hits.
Heat is the second cause and it works slowly. Years of dust in the cooling path keep the board running hotter than it should, solder joints age faster, and components fail earlier than they would otherwise. This is why an internal clean is genuinely preventive rather than cosmetic.
Liquid is the third. Something spilled near the vent runs down inside and sits on the board, and the corrosion spreads over weeks. That delay is why people often cannot connect the failure to anything they did.
Certain models also have known weak points. Some 2011 iMacs had graphics chips that failed predictably. Knowing which model has which weakness saves a lot of diagnostic time, and it is the sort of thing you only learn by seeing many of them.
How board repair actually works
This is bench work with proper equipment, not a parts swap, so it takes longer than other repairs.
- Power draw measurement. The board goes on a bench supply and we watch what current it pulls. That single reading narrows the fault down enormously before anything else happens.
- Rail testing. Working through the voltage rails in sequence to find exactly where the chain stops, then identifying the component responsible.
- Visual and thermal inspection. Looking under magnification for corrosion, burnt components and cracked joints, and using thermal imaging to find a part drawing current it should not.
- An honest quote. You get told what failed, what the repair costs, and whether we think it is worth doing on a machine of that age. Sometimes our answer is that it is not.
- Component level repair. The failed part is replaced under a microscope. The repaired section is then genuinely new rather than refurbished.
- Extended testing. Board repairs get soak tested for far longer than other work, because a marginal repair will pass a short test and fail a week later.
Cost of board repair
Nobody can quote board work honestly over the phone, because the price depends entirely on which component failed. What we can promise is that the diagnosis is free and the quote comes before any work.
If the machine turns out not to be worth repairing, we tell you and you owe nothing for finding out. We would rather say that than take money for a job that leaves you with an old machine and an empty wallet.
| Type of fault | Time needed |
|---|---|
| Diagnosis and report | Free, 1 to 2 days |
| Power circuit repair | 3 to 5 days |
| Graphics chip repair or reball | 4 to 7 days |
| Liquid damage cleaning and repair | 3 to 7 days |
| Data recovery from a dead board | 2 to 5 days |
Parts and warranty
Twelve month warranty on the repair, the same as any other work here. A component level repair is not a temporary fix and we stand behind it in writing.
Where a board genuinely cannot be saved, we can almost always still recover your data from the drive. That is quoted separately rather than bundled into a repair that will not happen.
Why bring your iMac to us
Component level repair is the whole point. Being quoted for a replacement board is being quoted the easy answer, and on an iMac it is frequently more than the machine is worth. We find the failed part and replace that.
Free diagnosis with a written report, microscope and thermal imaging on the bench, twelve month warranty, free collection across Bangalore, and a genuinely honest opinion when a repair is not worth your money.
Questions people ask
Is my data still there?
Almost certainly. A board fault sits in the circuitry and does not touch the storage. Even where the board cannot be repaired at all, the data can normally be recovered from the drive.
Why is board repair cheaper than a new board?
Because you are paying for skilled time on one failed component instead of an entire replacement assembly. It takes longer and needs a microscope and proper rework equipment, but the parts cost is tiny by comparison.
How long will you have my iMac?
Three to seven days for most board work. Part of that is diagnosis and a good part is soak testing afterwards, because a marginal repair will pass a short test and fail later.
Can a board damaged by liquid be saved?
Often, yes, if it comes in reasonably soon. Corrosion keeps spreading for as long as the residue is on the board, so the sooner it is cleaned the better the odds. Leaving it for months makes it much harder.
Should I just buy a new iMac instead?
Sometimes, and we will say so. On a very old machine with an expensive fault, the money is better spent elsewhere. You get that opinion for free and there is no obligation either way.
How do I stop it happening again?
A decent surge protector or a UPS, and an internal clean every couple of years. Power quality and heat cause most of the board failures we see, and both are avoidable.
Book it in
Do not accept a quote for a whole replacement board until somebody has tested which component actually failed. Our diagnosis is free and it very often turns a huge bill into a manageable one.
