iMac Hard Disk and SSD Repair
iMac Hard Disk and SSD Repair in Bangalore
Most iMacs that arrive here described as slow do not have a processor problem or a memory problem. They have a tired mechanical hard disk that was never fast to begin with and has spent eight years getting slower.
The other thing worth knowing is that a hard disk gives you warning before it fails. Long pauses, files that take an age to open, the occasional freeze. People live with those for months. Those months are the window in which your data can still be copied off easily, so it is worth acting during them.

What a failing iMac drive looks like
The earlier ones on this list are warnings. The later ones mean you should stop using the machine and bring it in.
- The spinning wheel appears for everything, even opening a folder
- Startup takes three or four minutes when it used to take thirty seconds
- Files or folders have vanished, or will not open
- A clicking or grinding noise from inside the machine
- It freezes completely and needs a forced shutdown
- A folder with a question mark appears instead of the desktop
- The machine says the disk cannot be repaired
- It works fine one day and refuses to start the next
Why iMac drives give trouble
A mechanical hard disk has spinning platters and a moving head, and those parts wear out. Most iMacs sold before 2017 shipped with one, and after seven or eight years of daily use they start developing bad sectors. That is what the long pauses are. The machine is trying to read a sector repeatedly before giving up.
Fusion Drive causes a particular problem worth understanding. It joins a small SSD and a large hard disk into what looks like one drive. When the hard disk half starts failing, the whole volume fails with it, including everything stored on the healthy SSD half. People are always surprised by that.
A full drive causes symptoms that look identical to a failing one. macOS needs free working space, and once you drop under roughly ten percent free the machine slows badly and then starts hanging. This costs nothing to fix and it is always worth checking first.
SSDs fail differently. They rarely give warning noises. They usually work perfectly and then go read only or disappear entirely. That is why backups matter more on an SSD machine, not less.
What we do
Your data comes first here. Everything else waits until it is safe.
- Read the drive health. Error counts, reallocated sectors and power on hours. This takes a few minutes, tells us how much life is left, and costs you nothing.
- Copy your data off. If the drive is failing, we take an image of it before doing anything else. Running diagnostics on a dying drive can be what finally kills it, so the copy comes first.
- Tell you the options. Whether a clean up will do, whether the drive needs replacing, and what an SSD would cost against a like for like swap.
- Fit the new drive. The iMac display has to come off to reach the drive, so the reseal work matters here as much as on a screen repair.
- Restore and test. Your data goes back on, the system gets rebuilt properly, and the machine runs under load before it comes back to you.
Cost of the work
An SSD upgrade is the single best money you can spend on an older iMac. It is not a small difference. A 2015 iMac with an SSD fitted feels like a different machine, and it costs a fraction of replacing it.
Data recovery is priced separately from the repair, because how difficult it is depends entirely on the state of the drive.
| Job | Time needed |
|---|---|
| Drive health check and clean up | Same day |
| Hard disk replacement | 1 to 2 days |
| SSD upgrade with data transfer | 1 to 2 days |
| Fusion Drive rebuild | 2 to 3 days |
| Data recovery from a failing drive | 2 to 5 days |
Parts and warranty
Twelve month warranty on the drive we fit and on the work. Data transfer is included in a replacement, not charged as an extra.
We keep your data on a separate copy until you have confirmed everything is present and working. Nothing gets deleted from our side while you are still checking.
Why bring your iMac to us
Most shops in Bangalore will run diagnostics on a failing drive before copying anything off it. That is backwards, and it is how people lose photos permanently. We image first and diagnose second.
Free health check, free pickup and drop across the city, genuine parts and honest advice on whether an older iMac is worth the upgrade. Sometimes it is not, and we will say so.
Questions people ask
My iMac is slow. Do I need a new one?
Usually not. On a pre-2017 iMac the mechanical hard disk is nearly always the cause, and an SSD upgrade transforms it for a fraction of the price of a new machine. We will tell you honestly when a machine really has reached the end.
Can you save my data?
In most cases yes, and the odds are far better if you bring it in while it is still starting up occasionally. Once a drive stops being detected entirely, recovery becomes harder and more expensive.
What is a Fusion Drive and why does it matter?
It is a small SSD and a large hard disk joined together to look like one volume. When the hard disk half fails, the entire volume fails, including data that physically sits on the working SSD. It catches people out regularly.
Should I keep using it while I wait for an appointment?
If you are hearing clicking or seeing files disappear, no. Switch it off and bring it in. Every hour a failing drive spins is another chance for the damage to spread.
How much faster will an SSD actually make it?
Startup drops from minutes to seconds and applications open more or less instantly. On an older iMac it is the most noticeable upgrade available, more so than extra memory.
Does the screen have to come off?
Yes, on every iMac. That means the adhesive seal has to be cut and replaced, which is included in our price and is part of why this is not a home job.
Book it in
If your iMac has started pausing or making noises, bring it in now rather than later. Recovery while a drive still works is straightforward. Recovery after it stops is neither quick nor cheap.
